VectorCraft, the Free Illustrator Alternative: 88% There

VectorCraft is a free, open-source Illustrator alternative in Rust from ArtCraft, in alpha since October 2026. Its own scorecard puts 88% of Illustrator in place and 65% ready for real work. It opens SVG, PDF and .ai files but cannot round-trip Illustrator editing data.

Inkscape has been the free Illustrator alternative for two decades, and the reason designers still pay Adobe is not that Inkscape lacks features. It is that Inkscape is not Illustrator: the tools are named differently, the shortcuts differ, and an .ai file from a client is a negotiation. VectorCraft's bet is to copy Illustrator's layout and vocabulary exactly, then fill in the behaviour behind it. Two weeks after release, the project's own scorecard says it is most of the way on the first part and about two-thirds on the second.

This guide uses VectorCraft's README and its self-assessed parity figures, the ArtCraft site, the GitHub release record and the press coverage of the suite. We have not used it; the parity numbers are the developer's, measured by the team against Adobe's public documentation.

What VectorCraft is

VectorCraft is the free Illustrator alternative among the seven Craft apps from ArtCraft, Brandon Thomas's company, all written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 by the developer's account and all described as clean-room reimplementations from public specifications. The README calls it "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Illustrator, rebuilt in pure Rust". The repository dates from 30 September 2026, reached version 0.10.0 on 12 October, and had 8,692 GitHub stars on 14 October. The ArtCraft apps page labels it "In development"; the README, dated 10 October, says "alpha".

The scorecard, in the project's own numbers

VectorCraft publishes parity figures rather than adjectives, which is unusual and worth quoting with their caveats. As of 10 October: about 88% of Illustrator 2026's menu items, tools, effects and formats exist; 92.5% of menu items do something; feature depth is about 75%; and the project rates itself about 65% "ready for real work" for a mainstream illustrator, or 62% against all of Illustrator. The README says these come from the team's own code compared against Illustrator's documentation. Treat them as a map of where the developer thinks the holes are, not as a benchmark anyone outside has checked.

Tools that are there

The core drawing set is the pitch: Pen and Direct Selection tools, Pathfinder and Shape Builder, paint, gradients and gradient mesh, live blends, appearance and transparency panels, type with styles, artboards, a perspective grid, envelope distort and a live Revolve in 3D. The README also claims bidirectional Hebrew and Arabic layout, and says its boolean operations on curves are exact rather than approximated, which is the sort of detail Illustrator users notice when Inkscape's results differ by a hair.

File formats, and the catch

VectorCraft saves to its own JSON-based .vectorcraft format and reads and writes SVG, PDF, PDF-compatible .ai including PDF/X, EPS, DXF and EMF/WMF, with raster export to PNG, JPEG and WebP and even PSD output. Affinity Designer, Photo and Publisher files open and place but cannot be written.

The catch is in the README's own list of gaps: reliable exchange of Illustrator's native .ai files is not there, because Illustrator's private editing data is not written. An .ai file saved from VectorCraft is a PDF-compatible file that Illustrator can open, not a file with its live effects and editing structure intact. For a freelancer trading files with an agency on Illustrator, that is the limitation that decides it.

What is missing

The README lists the rest: an "interaction-fidelity pass" on tool modifiers and small behaviours, 3D and Materials beyond the initial Revolve, 28 of the 57 Photoshop-style raster effects, CJK composition for vertical type, scripting and parts of Variables, and generative AI features. Illustrator's own generative tools, text-to-vector and the like, have no equivalent here, and for typographic logo work our Ideogram review covers the generators that render text.

How it is built, and the agent angle

Every Craft app exposes its commands beyond the UI. VectorCraft ships an MCP server, started with vectorcraft-cli mcp, and a JSON control channel, so an AI agent can draw, edit and export vector artwork programmatically. For a developer generating hundreds of icons or diagrams from data, that is a capability Illustrator does not offer without scripting, and it is where the "built with AI" story becomes a product feature rather than a curiosity.

Price and platforms

Free, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, with native builds for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and a browser build via WebAssembly. The apps page lists installers and a launcher for the whole suite. ArtCraft's subscription plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, are for generative credits in its separate AI studio; nothing requires one to run VectorCraft. Download from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com only, since lookalike download sites have appeared.

This free Illustrator alternative against Inkscape and Affinity Designer

Inkscape is mature, stable, free and open source, with an interface that is its own. Affinity Designer is polished and a one-time purchase, and opens .ai files well, but is not free. VectorCraft is the only one of the three that tries to be Illustrator itself, in menus, tools and shortcuts, and the only one that is two weeks old. If your work is your own and ends in SVG or PDF, it is already worth a look. If your work is a client's .ai file that must come back intact, Illustrator or Affinity remain the tools, and the parity figures say so.

Who should try it

Illustrator users who want a free Illustrator alternative with the same layout on Linux, where Adobe does not ship. Developers who want vector output driven by an agent. Anyone whose Illustrator subscription lapsed and whose files are SVG. Not yet: agencies exchanging native .ai files, or anyone who needs 3D, scripting or vertical CJK type.

The rest of the suite

The companion apps are PhotoCraft for Photoshop, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects, DesignCraft for InDesign and PdfCraft for Acrobat Pro. For a logo you intend to register, our Canva vs Looka comparison explains the ownership questions none of these tools settle, and the model behind the suite is reviewed at Claude.

FAQ

Is VectorCraft free?

Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, with installers for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and a browser version. ArtCraft's paid plans buy generative credits for a separate AI studio, not access to VectorCraft.

Can VectorCraft open Illustrator files?

It opens PDF-compatible .ai files, which is how Illustrator saves by default, along with SVG, PDF, EPS and DXF. It cannot preserve Illustrator's private editing data on save, so files sent back to Illustrator lose live effects and structure. The README lists this as a known gap.

How complete is VectorCraft compared with Illustrator?

By the project's own measure on 10 October 2026: about 88% of features exist, 92.5% of menu items do something, feature depth is about 75%, and it is about 65% ready for a mainstream illustrator's real work. These are self-assessed figures.

Does VectorCraft have AI features?

Not generative ones; the README lists generative AI as missing. What it has is an MCP server and a JSON control channel so AI agents can drive the app, which is a different kind of AI feature.

Is VectorCraft better than Inkscape?

Not yet in stability or maturity as a free Illustrator alternative; Inkscape has twenty years on it. Its advantage is Illustrator's own layout and shortcuts, exact boolean operations, and native .ai and PDF/X export, for users who find Inkscape's interface the obstacle.
