FilmCraft, the Free Premiere Pro Alternative: Alpha Reality

FilmCraft is a free, open-source Premiere Pro alternative in Rust from ArtCraft, in alpha since October 2026. Its own figures put feature breadth at 86% and readiness for real work at 56%. It cannot open .prproj files, and a Creative Bloq test had to transcode 4K 10-bit footage.

The free Premiere Pro alternative most editors already use is DaVinci Resolve, and it is not a clone of anything. FilmCraft takes the opposite route: it copies Premiere's monitors, panels and keyboard habits, then rebuilds the engine underneath in Rust. The result, two weeks after release, is an editor that looks right, cuts correctly on small footage, and runs its colour and export on the CPU. That last fact decides who it is for today.

This guide draws on the FilmCraft README and its parity figures, CineD's coverage of the suite, Creative Bloq's hands-on test of 13 October 2026, the ArtCraft site and the GitHub release record. We have not edited in it ourselves.

What FilmCraft is

FilmCraft is the free Premiere Pro alternative among ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, written in Rust and, by developer Brandon Thomas's account, with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5. The README describes it as "video editing, color and sound; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Premiere Pro". It states the app "contains no Adobe code, icons, images, presets or LUTs" and uses ffmpeg "only as an external test oracle", meaning its codecs are its own. The repository was created on 30 September 2026, reached version 0.7.2 on 12 October and had 12,906 stars on 14 October. The ArtCraft apps page labels it "In development"; the README says alpha.

The parity figures

Re-measured by the project against Premiere Pro 26.5.2 on 10 October: feature breadth about 86%, "ready for real work" about 56%. The gap between those two numbers is the whole story of the Craft apps. Most of the panels exist; just over half of the work an editor does can be done in them without hitting a wall.

The editor itself

The feature list is a Premiere user's checklist. Source and Program monitors, a multi-track timeline with three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip, slide and razor tools, J/K/L trimming, markers, nesting and unlimited undo. Time is kept on integer ticks, 254,016,000,000 a second, which the project says keeps 23.976 and 29.97 drop-frame timecode exact. A Lumetri-style colour panel offers basic correction, curves, wheels, HSL secondaries and a vignette, with scopes computed from the graded image and grading processed in linear light at 32-bit float. There are 93 effects in 16 folders, about 30 transitions, keyframes and blend modes, an audio mixer with loudness metering to the broadcast standards, titles, and caption import and export in SRT, WebVTT and SCC. Auto-save and a crash-recovery journal are included.

Codecs and formats

Software decode and encode for H.264, ProRes, AAC, DNxHD and DNxHR, MJPEG and PCM; decode only for HEVC, VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus, MP3, FLAC, ALAC and Vorbis; hardware decoding for H.264 and HEVC on all three desktop platforms. Containers cover MP4, MOV, Matroska, WebM, AVI, MXF, MPEG streams and Ogg. Export options are H.264 MP4 with AAC, ProRes 422 HQ, MJPEG, MXF, PNG sequences, GIF and WAV; the README says "no AV1 export yet" and H.265 export is hardware-only. Interchange runs through Final Cut Pro 7 XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, CMX 3600 EDL, AAF and OMF.

Premiere's own project files are the hard limit. The README states that ".prproj files can't be opened yet". An existing Premiere project does not migrate.

What the hands-on test found

Creative Bloq's Joe Foley tested FilmCraft on a Windows PC with an RTX 5070 and footage from a Canon EOS R5. The app did not support 10-bit 4:2:2 playback, so his 4K Clog3 clips had to be transcoded in Handbrake first. With no optimised-media or proxy workflow, 4K editing was very slow, and he downsized the footage before continuing. Once he had, basic trimming, cutting, transitions, LUT import and colour adjustments worked, with some artefacts in the shadows. The README agrees on the cause: "Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU", and Windows and Linux are less tested than macOS.

His verdict on the suite was that it is "not currently stable or complete enough to be able to replace existing software", and that given DaVinci Resolve exists, he was not convinced of the need. That is the fair comparison, and the next section makes it.

This free Premiere Pro alternative against DaVinci Resolve and CapCut

Resolve's free version is a professional editor, colour grader and audio suite with GPU acceleration, a decade of stability, and its own interface. FilmCraft is Premiere's interface with a CPU engine and two weeks of history. The honest ranking for anyone with real footage today is Resolve first. FilmCraft's case is narrower: editors who cannot unlearn Premiere's layout, Linux users, and small projects in H.264 at 1080p where CPU rendering is fine.

For short-form social video the comparison is different again. CapCut is faster for captions and templates where it is available, which excludes India, and Descript edits speech by editing the transcript; our CapCut vs Descript comparison covers that choice. FilmCraft has no auto-captions from speech and few AI features, by its own admission. For generated footage, Runway is a different category entirely.

Price, platforms and where to download

Free, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, with native builds for macOS, Windows and Linux, a browser build, and tarballs for FreeBSD and RISC-V. ArtCraft's paid plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not required. Download only from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com; copycat sites exist. No plug-in hosting is offered, so VST3, Audio Units and OpenFX effects do not load.

Who should try it

Editors on Linux who want a free Premiere Pro alternative, students learning Premiere's layout without a subscription, developers interested in a Rust NLE with its own codec stack, and anyone cutting 1080p H.264 who wants Premiere's habits for free. Not yet: anyone with 10-bit 4K camera footage, an existing .prproj project, a plug-in workflow, or a deadline. Those people should keep Resolve or Premiere and check back in a few releases, which arrive every few days.

The rest of the suite

The companion apps are PhotoCraft for Photoshop, VectorCraft for Illustrator, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects, DesignCraft for InDesign and PdfCraft for Acrobat Pro. The ranked best AI video tools list covers the hosted editors and generators, and the model behind the suite is reviewed at Claude.

FAQ

Is FilmCraft free?

Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 with installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. ArtCraft's subscriptions buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not needed to run FilmCraft.

Can FilmCraft open Premiere Pro projects?

No. The README states that .prproj files cannot be opened yet. It imports and exports Final Cut Pro XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF instead.

Does FilmCraft handle 4K and 10-bit footage?

Poorly, for now. Creative Bloq's test found no 10-bit 4:2:2 playback and very slow 4K editing without a proxy workflow, and the README says colour, keying and export still render on the CPU. Transcoding to 1080p H.264 first is the workaround the reviewer used.

Is FilmCraft better than DaVinci Resolve?

No. As a free Premiere Pro alternative, Resolve's free version is mature, GPU-accelerated and professional. FilmCraft's advantages are Premiere's interface, native Linux support alongside Windows and macOS, and a codebase an agent can drive. For real work today, Resolve.

Who made FilmCraft?

ArtCraft, the company of former Storyteller.ai CEO Brandon Thomas, which says the suite was written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 as a clean-room reimplementation containing no Adobe code.
