DesignCraft, the Free InDesign Alternative: Pre-Alpha Now
DesignCraft is a free, open-source InDesign alternative in Rust from ArtCraft, released in October 2026 and the least finished of the seven Craft apps: its roadmap calls it pre-alpha. It imports and exports IDML and exports PDF/X-4, PDF/A-2b and EPUB. INDD files are not supported.
Page layout is where free software has come closest to Adobe and still lost. Scribus has produced print-ready PDFs for twenty years, and designers keep paying for InDesign because of two things: the files their printers and colleagues send them, and the typography engine. DesignCraft is the newest free InDesign alternative, it addresses the second directly, and it is the least finished app in the ArtCraft suite by the project's own label.
This guide uses the DesignCraft README and roadmap, the ArtCraft site, the GitHub release record and the press coverage of the suite. No hands-on test of DesignCraft has been published that we could find, and we have not laid out a page in it.
What DesignCraft is
DesignCraft is the free InDesign alternative among ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, written in Rust and, by developer Brandon Thomas's account, with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5. The README calls it "a clean-room reimplementation of Adobe InDesign, rebuilt in pure Rust" and "an independent, open-source project" with no affiliation to Adobe. The repository dates from 1 October 2026, reached version 0.7.1 on 12 October and had 3,811 stars on 14 October, the fewest of the seven. The ArtCraft apps page labels it "In development"; the project's own roadmap gives its stage as "pre-alpha", one step behind the alpha label the other six carry.
What exists
The README describes the skeleton of an InDesign workflow: spreads and parent pages, frames and threaded stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches, text wrap, columns, hyphenation and justification. The typographic detail that stands out is a Knuth-Plass paragraph composer, the line-breaking algorithm from TeX that considers a whole paragraph at once rather than one line at a time, which is the approach InDesign's own composer takes and the thing that makes its text look set rather than typed. Whether DesignCraft's implementation matches InDesign's results is not something anyone outside has tested.
Not mentioned in the README: tables, preflight, packaging for print, or master pages under that name. The project links a gaps document and a parity document on GitHub for the detail, and that is where a prospective user should look before trusting any feature.
File formats
IDML, InDesign's XML interchange format, imports and exports, which is the practical bridge: InDesign can save to IDML and open it, so a document can cross in both directions with its structure intact, within whatever DesignCraft supports. INDD, InDesign's native binary format, is not mentioned, and ArtCraft publishes a separate small tool for reading INDD files and converting them to IDML. Export covers PNG, PDF including PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b, and EPUB. PDF/X-4 is the format commercial printers ask for, so its presence this early is notable; whether a printer will accept DesignCraft's output is a question to settle with a test file, not a README.
Why pre-alpha matters here
A page layout app is judged on reliability at the end of a project: the moment a 200-page document goes to press and every frame, style and bleed must be right. Pre-alpha software is, by definition, not there. The other Craft apps have at least one published hands-on test; DesignCraft has none, and its own roadmap places it behind them. For anything with a print deadline, that settles it for now.
Price, platforms and downloads
Free, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, with native builds for macOS, Windows and Linux and a browser build via WebAssembly. ArtCraft's subscription plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not required. Download from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com only; copycat download sites exist.
This free InDesign alternative against Scribus, Affinity Publisher and Canva
Scribus is free, open source, mature and produces reliable print PDFs, with an interface and vocabulary of its own. Affinity Publisher is polished, opens IDML, and is a one-time purchase rather than free. Canva handles most of what small businesses once used InDesign for, in a browser, with templates; our Canva Magic Studio review covers it, and for decks rather than documents, Gamma and Beautiful.ai are compared in our AI presentation maker guide. DesignCraft's only distinct pitch today is InDesign's own panels, styles and composer in a free native app; everything else, the three alternatives above do better now.
Who should try it
People who want to watch a page layout engine being built in public, developers interested in Knuth-Plass in Rust, and InDesign users on Linux who are curious. Not yet: anyone producing a document for print, a client, or a deadline. Check the roadmap in a month; the suite ships releases every few days.
The rest of the suite
The companion apps are PhotoCraft for Photoshop, VectorCraft for Illustrator, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects and PdfCraft for Acrobat Pro. The model that wrote them is reviewed at Claude.
FAQ
Is DesignCraft free?
Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 with builds for macOS, Windows, Linux and the browser. ArtCraft's paid plans buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not needed to run it.
Can DesignCraft open InDesign files?
It imports and exports IDML, InDesign's interchange format, which InDesign can save and open. The native INDD format is not supported; ArtCraft publishes a separate utility for converting INDD to IDML.
Is DesignCraft ready to use?
Not for real documents. Its roadmap labels it pre-alpha, behind the alpha label on the other six Craft apps, and no independent hands-on test has been published.
Does DesignCraft export print-ready PDFs?
It lists PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b export, which are the formats printers and archives ask for. Whether a given printer accepts its output is something to confirm with a test file.
Is DesignCraft better than Scribus?
Not yet. As a free InDesign alternative, Scribus is mature and reliable for print. DesignCraft's advantage is InDesign's own interface and a Knuth-Plass composer, for users who find Scribus's layout the obstacle, and it is months away from being judged on output.
