PdfCraft, the Free Acrobat Pro Alternative (Was PrintCraft)
PdfCraft, announced as PrintCraft, is a free, open-source Acrobat Pro alternative in Rust from ArtCraft, in alpha since October 2026. Its README claims 57% of Acrobat's tracked features and 94% of the must-haves; combining, forms, redaction and signatures work, text editing is thin.
Acrobat Pro is the Adobe subscription people resent most, because most of what they pay for is combining, splitting, signing and filling forms, and free tools have done those jobs for years. PdfCraft, which the developer first announced as PrintCraft, is ArtCraft's free Acrobat Pro alternative, an attempt to do all of it in one native app that looks like Acrobat. Its README's own figures put it a little over halfway there, with the must-have features mostly present and the hard one, editing text inside a PDF, mostly not.
This guide uses the PdfCraft README, the ArtCraft site, the GitHub release record and press coverage of the suite. Creative Bloq's hands-on test of 13 October did not include PdfCraft, and we have not run it ourselves.
What PdfCraft is, and the name
PdfCraft is the free Acrobat Pro alternative among ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, written in Rust and, by developer Brandon Thomas's account, with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5. The README calls it "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Acrobat" whose behaviour "comes from the ISO 32000 specification and black-box observation, never from anyone else's code". Early coverage, and Creative Bloq's list of the suite, used the name PrintCraft; the repository, the apps page and the README all say PdfCraft, and a leftover link to a printcraft page is the only trace of the old name. If you searched for PrintCraft, this is the app.
The repository dates from 30 September 2026, reached version 0.7.1 on 12 October and had 13,265 stars on 14 October, second only to PhotoCraft in the suite. The ArtCraft apps page labels it "Early alpha"; the README says "PdfCraft is alpha".
The parity figures
The README states that "most of Acrobat Pro's offline features exist in some form (57% of all tracked features, 94% of the must-haves)". For everyday work it rates itself about 55% of the way to replacing Acrobat, about 49% against all of Acrobat Pro, and about 66% for essential needs only. Those are the project's numbers against Adobe's documentation; it also says it has not been compared with Acrobat side by side.
What works, per the README
Viewing with deep-zoom tiled rendering, search, bookmarks and page labels. Organising: rotate, delete, insert and move pages; combine, extract and split documents. Forms, including form filling with JavaScript run in a sandbox. Comments, layers and attachments. Security: passwords and encryption, redaction and sanitising, and basic digital signatures. Printing is "good today" except from the browser build. OCR exists, with the README calling OCR "beyond Latin script" thin.
That list covers what most people open Acrobat for. The gaps are in the next section.
What is thin or missing
Reliable editing of existing text is "thin or missing", especially for CJK and right-to-left scripts, which is the feature that separates Acrobat Pro from a free reader. Image editing is not described. Preflight, PDF/X and PDF/UA are missing. Office import and export are missing, with Office-to-PDF planned next. Signature tokens, online long-term validation and full XFA forms are not there. Two engineering caveats are more important than any of these: pages are currently drawn by a third-party Rust crate "while our own renderer is built", and fuzzing "still turns up crashes and hangs on hostile files". A PDF from an untrusted source is exactly the file a PDF app must handle safely, so that second sentence deserves weight.
Price, platforms and downloads
Free, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, with the ArtCraft name and logos excluded from the licence. Native builds for macOS, Windows on x64, x86 and ARM64, Linux in several packages including RISC-V tarballs, FreeBSD, and a browser build. ArtCraft's subscription plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not required to run PdfCraft. Download from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com only; copycat download sites exist.
This free Acrobat Pro alternative against the PDF tools you already have
macOS Preview combines, signs and annotates. LibreOffice opens PDFs for editing. PDFgear, PDF24 and similar free tools cover merging, splitting, compressing and OCR, and the browsers themselves fill forms. For reading and summarising a document rather than editing it, ChatGPT and Claude do what no PDF app does, and our guide to summarising PDFs with AI covers the free routes. PdfCraft's distinct pitch is Acrobat's own layout for all of those jobs in one native app, with redaction and sandboxed form scripts, free on every desktop platform. Until its own renderer ships and the fuzzing results settle, the established free tools are the safer choice for files from strangers.
Who should try it
Anyone who pays for Acrobat Pro to combine, split, redact and sign and wants to see those jobs done free in a familiar layout. Linux and FreeBSD users, for whom Acrobat has never existed. Developers, because the app can be driven by an agent. Not yet: anyone who edits text inside PDFs for a living, anyone who needs PDF/X or PDF/UA compliance, and anyone opening PDFs from unknown senders on a machine that matters.
The rest of the suite
The companion apps are PhotoCraft for Photoshop, VectorCraft for Illustrator, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects and DesignCraft for InDesign. Anthropic's own account of the agent-scale coding behind projects like this is in our report on Scion replacing git.
FAQ
Is PdfCraft the same as PrintCraft?
Yes. The developer's first announcement called the Acrobat Pro replacement PrintCraft; the repository, the ArtCraft apps page and the README now call it PdfCraft, and the only trace of the old name is a leftover link.
Is PdfCraft free?
Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 with builds for macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and the browser. ArtCraft's paid plans buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not needed to run it.
Can PdfCraft edit text in a PDF?
Barely, by its own account. The README describes reliable editing of existing text as "thin or missing", especially for CJK and right-to-left scripts. Combining, splitting, forms, annotations, redaction and basic signatures are the parts that work.
Is PdfCraft safe for PDFs from unknown senders?
Treat it with care. The README says fuzzing still finds crashes and hangs on hostile files, and pages are rendered by a third-party library while the project builds its own. Use an established tool for untrusted documents for now.
How complete is PdfCraft?
By its own figures, as a free Acrobat Pro alternative: 57% of all tracked Acrobat Pro features and 94% of the must-haves exist, and it is about 55% of the way to replacing Acrobat for everyday work. It has not been compared with Acrobat side by side.
