EffectCraft, the Free After Effects Alternative: 306 Effects

EffectCraft is a free, open-source After Effects alternative in Rust from ArtCraft, in alpha since October 2026. Its README claims 306 effects covering all 298 of After Effects' and puts itself 45% of the way to professional use. It cannot open .aep projects or run plug-ins.

A free After Effects alternative is the rarest kind, because a compositor is hard to write: keyframes, expressions, 3D cameras, hundreds of effects, and a render pipeline that must agree with itself frame after frame. Blender's compositor and Natron exist, and neither looks or works like After Effects. EffectCraft does, in menus and panels, and its README is unusually frank about how much of the behaviour behind them is finished: "about 45% of the way to replacing After Effects for professional work".

This guide uses the EffectCraft README, CineD's coverage of the suite, the ArtCraft site and the GitHub release record. Creative Bloq's hands-on test of 13 October did not include EffectCraft, so there is no independent test to cite yet, and we have not run it ourselves.

What EffectCraft is

EffectCraft is the free After Effects alternative among ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, written in Rust and, by developer Brandon Thomas's account, with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5. The README calls it "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe After Effects", built from Adobe's public documentation and observed behaviour, and says it never uses "Adobe's files, icons, presets or code". The repository dates from 1 October 2026, reached version 0.9.2 on 12 October and had 6,395 stars on 14 October. The ArtCraft apps page labels it "In development"; the README says "EffectCraft is in alpha" and that it "isn't yet a replacement for After Effects on client work".

What exists

The compositor's vocabulary is all there by the README's list: compositions, layers, keyframes, expressions, layer styles, 3D cameras and lights, shape layers, text with animators, masks, puppet tools, time remapping and a Graph Editor. The headline claim is 306 effects that cover "every one of After Effects' 298, and more". The project's own parity line says about 91% of After Effects' features exist, against that 45% readiness figure for professional work; as with the other Craft apps, the distance between those two numbers is where the work remains.

Tracking and the optional AI models

Two tools download models on demand. Roto Brush can use MobileSAM, a 40 MB download, for rotoscoping. Face tracking can use Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, a 3.8 MB download. The README notes that neither has been compared with After Effects' equivalents yet, which is the honest way to describe a feature that exists but has no benchmark. For generated video rather than composited video, Pika and Runway are different tools for a different job; our Pika vs Runway comparison covers that pair.

Project files and plug-ins

Projects save as versioned JSON in an .ecproj file. EffectCraft cannot open After Effects .aep or .aepx projects, and After Effects plug-ins do not run. For anyone with a library of templates or a plug-in they depend on, that is the end of the evaluation for now. Lottie import and export are built in, in .json and .lottie form, which matters for web and app animation work and is a workflow After Effects itself needs a plug-in for.

Rendering and export

Video and audio codecs are pure Rust with no FFmpeg dependency. The Render Queue with Output Modules exports H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV, HEVC, AV1 MP4, WebM with VP9 or AV1 and Opus audio, PNG, JPEG, TIFF and EXR sequences, animated GIF, and WAV or AIFF audio. That export list is broader than FilmCraft's, which is worth knowing if you need AV1.

Platforms, and the one that works best

Native builds for macOS, Windows and Linux, a FreeBSD tarball and a browser build via WebAssembly. The README says "macOS is the most tested platform" and that Linux and Windows users "have hit basic interaction bugs", which the project is fixing first. For a Windows motion designer that is the sentence to read twice.

Price and downloads

Free, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. ArtCraft's subscription plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for the company's separate AI studio and are not required to run EffectCraft. Download from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com only; copycat download sites appeared within days of launch.

This free After Effects alternative against Blender, Natron and Autograph

Blender is free, mature and includes a node-based compositor, and it is a 3D package first. Natron is a free node-based compositor modelled on Nuke, not After Effects. Maxon's Autograph is a paid After Effects-style tool that Creative Bloq cited as a reason it was not convinced the suite was needed. EffectCraft's distinct pitch is the After Effects layer-based model itself, with 306 effects, Lottie built in and a Rust render engine, offered free on three platforms. Its distinct weakness is that none of it has been measured against After Effects by anyone outside the project, and the project says so.

Who should try it

Motion designers on macOS with time to explore, Lottie-focused web animators, Linux users who have never had an After Effects-style tool, and developers interested in a compositor an agent can drive over MCP. Not yet: anyone with .aep templates, plug-in dependencies, or client deliverables, and Windows or Linux users who need basic interaction to be reliable today.

The rest of the suite

The companion apps are PhotoCraft for Photoshop, VectorCraft for Illustrator, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, LightCraft for Lightroom, DesignCraft for InDesign and PdfCraft for Acrobat Pro. The ranked best AI video tools list covers the hosted generators and editors, and the model behind the suite is reviewed at Claude.

FAQ

Is EffectCraft free?

Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 with native builds for macOS, Windows and Linux and a browser build. ArtCraft's paid plans buy generative credits for a separate AI studio and are not needed to run it.

Can EffectCraft open After Effects projects?

No. Its own format is .ecproj, and the README states it cannot open .aep or .aepx files. After Effects plug-ins do not run either. Lottie files import and export.

How complete is EffectCraft?

By its own account: about 91% of After Effects' features exist, 306 effects cover all 298 of After Effects', and it is about 45% of the way to replacing After Effects for professional work. No outside test has measured it yet.

Does EffectCraft work on Windows?

There are Windows builds, but the README says macOS is the most tested platform and that Windows and Linux users have hit basic interaction bugs that are being fixed first.

Is EffectCraft better than Blender for motion graphics?

Not in maturity; as a free After Effects alternative, Blender has decades of development behind it. EffectCraft's advantage is the After Effects layer-and-keyframe model, built-in Lottie, and effects named and arranged the way After Effects users expect.
