PdfCraft Review (2026): Pricing, Features, Pros & Cons
Our verdict
PdfCraft already does the jobs most people pay Acrobat Pro for, combining, splitting, forms, redaction and signatures, free on every desktop platform. Text editing is thin and the renderer is borrowed for now, so keep an established tool for PDFs from strangers.

About PdfCraft
PdfCraft is the Acrobat member of ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, a PDF reader and editor written from scratch in Rust and released in early October 2026. The developer's first announcement called it PrintCraft, and some early coverage still does; the repository, the ArtCraft apps page and the README all say PdfCraft. The README calls it "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Acrobat" whose behaviour "comes from the ISO 32000 specification and black-box observation, never from anyone else's code". The repository had 13,265 GitHub stars on 14 October 2026, second in the suite only to PhotoCraft, and version 0.7.1 shipped on 12 October. The README says "PdfCraft is alpha".
Its parity figures: "most of Acrobat Pro's offline features exist in some form (57% of all tracked features, 94% of the must-haves)". For everyday work it rates itself about 55% of the way to replacing Acrobat, 49% against all of Acrobat Pro, and 66% for essential needs only, and it says it has not been compared with Acrobat side by side.
What works, per the README: viewing with deep-zoom tiled rendering, search, bookmarks and page labels; rotating, deleting, inserting and moving pages; combining, extracting and splitting documents; form filling with JavaScript run in a sandbox; comments, layers and attachments; passwords and encryption, redaction and sanitising, and basic digital signatures; printing from the desktop builds; and OCR, which the README calls thin beyond Latin script. That covers what most people open Acrobat for.
What is thin or missing matters more. Reliable editing of existing text is "thin or missing", especially for CJK and right-to-left scripts. Preflight, PDF/X and PDF/UA are missing, as are Office import and export, signature tokens, long-term validation and full XFA forms. Two engineering caveats carry weight for a PDF app: pages are drawn by a third-party Rust crate while the project builds its own renderer, and fuzzing "still turns up crashes and hangs on hostile files". Builds exist for macOS, Windows on x64, x86 and ARM64, Linux including RISC-V, FreeBSD, and the browser. No independent hands-on test had been published by 14 October 2026.
How it was built, and how to read the numbers. ArtCraft's founder Brandon Thomas, formerly CEO of Storyteller.ai, says the Craft apps were written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 as clean-room reimplementations from public documentation, with no Adobe code, icons or presets. The parity percentages quoted above are the project's own, measured by its team against Adobe's documentation; no outside party has verified them, and the project itself distinguishes between a feature that exists and one that behaves like Adobe's. We have not installed the app. Download only from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com, because lookalike download sites appeared within days of launch. ArtCraft's paid plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for the company's separate AI studio and are not needed to run any Craft app.
