About NotebookLM

NotebookLM is Google's research and note-taking assistant, and it differs from a general chatbot in one rule: it answers only from the sources you give it. Upload PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, web pages, YouTube videos or audio, and every answer cites the passage it came from, which makes it the assistant for studying a syllabus, reading a contract or working through a set of papers rather than for asking about the world.

The feature that made it famous is the Audio Overview, a two-host podcast-style discussion generated from your sources. Alongside it sit Video Overviews, study guides, briefing documents, FAQs, timelines and mind maps, all generated from the notebook's sources rather than from general knowledge. The chat keeps citations inline, so a claim can be checked against the page it came from in one click, and it will say when the sources do not cover a question instead of inventing an answer, which is the behaviour students and lawyers want from it.

Pricing is by Google AI plan rather than a NotebookLM subscription. Google's limits page lists a Standard tier free with a Gmail account at 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook; Plus, through Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month or ₹399 in India, at 200 notebooks and 100 sources; Pro, through Google AI Pro at $19.99 or a qualifying Workspace licence, at 500 notebooks and 300 sources; and Ultra at 500 notebooks and up to 600 sources. The page says usage limits are subject to change and keeps daily caps on a separate article; third-party trackers report about 50 chat queries and 3 Audio Overviews a day on the free tier and 500 and 20 on Pro, figures Google does not publish on the plans page. One line matters for Indian users: watermark removal on generated media is listed for Pro and Ultra only, and Google notes that "a visible watermark will be applied automatically if you reside in India, South Korea, or Vietnam".

Browser access is open to anyone above the age of consent in supported countries, with mobile apps on iOS and Android. The limits are generous for a student or a researcher and tight for a team, which is where Workspace licences come in. For reading a long PDF and asking questions about it, our guide to summarising PDFs with AI compares NotebookLM with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini; the short version is that NotebookLM is the one that refuses to go beyond the document.
