These two get compared because students use both, but they do different jobs. ChatGPT is a tutor that knows something about everything. NotebookLM, which Google renamed Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026, is a reader that knows only what you give it and shows you where each answer came from. Which one helps depends on whether you already have the material you'll be examined on.
If you study from your own notes, NotebookLM wins
Give it a semester's slides, a textbook chapter, past papers and your own notes, and every answer comes from them. Google's FAQ says that if the answer isn't in the source material, it won't provide a response, and each answer carries citations that open the exact quote in your source. For exam revision that is the property that matters: you can check every claim against the page you'll be marked on.
The free allowance is built for this. Google's plans page gives the free tier 100 notebooks of 50 sources each, and each source can run to 500,000 words. Usage is now metered by compute rather than fixed daily numbers; Google says the quota refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit.
From those sources it builds study material: flashcards and quizzes at easy, medium or hard difficulty, study guides, mind maps, and Audio Overviews, podcast-style discussions you can listen to on a commute. Our guide to studying with NotebookLM walks through setting up a notebook for one subject.
If you have no notes yet, ChatGPT is the tutor
ChatGPT's study mode, available on every plan including Free, works differently. OpenAI says that instead of only giving a final answer, it "can ask questions, guide your thinking, explain ideas step by step, and check your understanding as you go." Because it draws on its own knowledge, it can teach a topic you haven't started reading yet, which NotebookLM can't do without sources.
OpenAI added interactive quizzes for all consumer plans in August 2026 and flashcards made from your uploaded notes in September, so the study tools are no longer one-sided. Two catches. Study mode is not available inside Projects, which is where ChatGPT keeps a subject's files together. And OpenAI documents no mode that limits answers to your files, so a confident answer may come from the model rather than your textbook.
The free plans for an Indian student
The gap is widest on uploads. OpenAI's file upload FAQ says free users are limited to 3 file uploads a day, and a free project holds 5 files. A NotebookLM notebook holds 50 sources on the free tier, so a whole subject fits on day one.
Paying costs about the same. ChatGPT Go is ₹399 a month and Plus ₹1,999, as the pricing page showed from India on 24 October 2026; our ChatGPT Go vs Plus guide compares them. Google's India page lists AI Plus at ₹399 a month, which doubles Gemini Notebook's limits, and AI Pro at ₹1,950.
Students have one more option. Eligible university students aged 18+ can claim Google AI Plus free for a year until 31 December 2026. Google asks for a payment method and charges ₹399 a month after the year unless you cancel. We found no open ChatGPT student offer in India; OpenAI's free year of Go closed to new claims on 21 January 2026.
Hindi and other Indian languages
Google lists 80+ languages for NotebookLM's chat and Audio Overviews, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi. It answers in the language set in your Google account, so a student can upload English notes and hear an Audio Overview in Hindi. Longer Audio Overviews and the interactive mode are English only.
A routine that uses both
Use each for its job. Put the syllabus, slides and past papers in a NotebookLM notebook, generate flashcards and a quiz, and listen to an Audio Overview before the lecture. When a concept still doesn't make sense, take it to ChatGPT's study mode and let it question you until it does. Then go back to the notebook and check what you learned against the material you'll be examined on.
Two things to watch. In India, NotebookLM is open from age 13, but some features, such as Cinematic Video Overviews, are 18+. And whatever either tool says, your textbook and your teacher are the final word on what the exam expects. Our guide to AI tools for students covers what helps and what can get your work flagged.
Verdict: Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) wins
NotebookLM wins for revising a syllabus, textbook or class notes, because it answers from them and shows where. Choose ChatGPT when you have no material yet and need a topic explained from scratch.
Frequently asked questions
Is NotebookLM better than ChatGPT for studying?+
For revising material you already have, yes: it answers from your sources, cites the passage and turns them into flashcards, quizzes and audio summaries. For learning a topic you have no notes on, ChatGPT's study mode explains it from scratch.
Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?+
Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026 and calls it the same standalone product. It now lives at notebook.google.com, and old NotebookLM links redirect there.
Can ChatGPT answer only from my notes?+
OpenAI documents no sources-only mode. ChatGPT can use the files you add, but it also draws on its own knowledge and web search, and study mode doesn't work inside Projects, where files are kept together.
How many files can I upload to ChatGPT for free?+
OpenAI's file upload FAQ says free users are limited to 3 file uploads a day, and a free project holds up to 5 files. Go and Plus raise a project to 25 files.
