Is GPT-6 Free? What Each ChatGPT Tier Gets

Yes, partly. GPT-6 Luna reaches ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers; GPT-6 Sol needs Plus or above. OpenAI has published no free-tier message limit.

OpenAI split GPT-6 into two models sharing one name, and which one you get depends on what you pay. So: is GPT-6 free? Partly, and the part that matters is what the split costs you.

Is GPT-6 free? Which tier gets which model

Announced on 7 October 2026, per 9to5Mac's report of the rollout:

ChatGPT tier Model
Free GPT-6 Luna
Go GPT-6 Luna
Plus GPT-6 Sol
Pro GPT-6 Sol
Business, Enterprise, Edu GPT-6 Sol

Sol went out immediately to the paid tiers. Luna began reaching Free and Go the following day.

So "is GPT-6 free" has a true answer and a misleading one. You can use a GPT-6 model without paying. You cannot use the model OpenAI positions for hard work without paying.

The honest gap: nobody has published a free message limit

OpenAI has not published how many Luna messages a free account gets. Until it does, treat "GPT-6 is free" as a statement about the model and not about the quantity.

This matters more than it sounds. Free-tier access to a good model has historically been rationed by message caps that reset on a window, and the cap — not the model — is what decides whether a free account is usable for real work. Be sceptical of any article quoting a specific free-tier limit right now, including ones citing API rate limits: those are a different system, applying to developers calling the API with a key, not to ChatGPT accounts.

If you are in India and claimed the ChatGPT Go free year from November 2025, Luna is the model you are now getting, and those twelve months start ending in November 2026.

What Sol and Luna actually cost on the API

This is where the two models separate properly. From OpenAI's own pricing documentation, per million tokens:

Sol input Sol output Luna input Luna output
Up to 272K context $2.00 $10.00 $0.10 $0.50
Above 272K context $4.00 $15.00 $0.20 $0.75

Cached input is far cheaper on both: $0.20 and $0.40 for Sol, $0.01 and $0.02 for Luna.

Two things worth taking from that table. Luna is twenty times cheaper than Sol on input at the same context length, which is why OpenAI puts it in front of free users — it can afford to. And there is a price cliff at 272,000 tokens: cross it and every rate roughly doubles.

Several write-ups currently claim both models share one flat 1,050,000-token window at a single price. OpenAI's documentation does not say that. It documents a short-context band at or below 272K and a long-context band above it, priced differently. If you are budgeting a long-context workload, that distinction is the difference between an estimate and a surprise.

It is also the second time this month a major lab has shipped a cheap model with a context-length cliff. Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5, released the same day, multiplies every rate by five above 100,000 tokens — we covered both in this week's roundup. The pattern is worth noticing: headline prices now describe short prompts.

Intelligent UI, which arrived with it

Alongside the models, OpenAI introduced Intelligent UI. Rather than replying only in prose, ChatGPT can assemble an answer from graphics, tappable buttons, forms and charts, and build small interactive things — a calculator, a simple game — inside the conversation, choosing the format to suit the question.

It is a presentation change rather than a capability one, and it is not tied to paying: it is a ChatGPT feature, not a Sol feature.

Should you keep paying for Plus?

If you pay for Plus mainly because the free model was not good enough, the honest answer is to wait before cancelling. The gap between tiers may now be quota rather than capability, and until OpenAI publishes Luna's free-tier limits nobody can tell you which. Our ChatGPT review tracks the tier limits as they are published, and ChatGPT vs Claude compares the two assistants on everyday work.

If you are building on the API rather than chatting, the decision is simpler and the table above makes it: Luna for high volume and short prompts, Sol when the task genuinely needs it.

FAQ

Is GPT-6 free to use?

Partly. GPT-6 Luna is available on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers, so you can use a GPT-6 model at no cost. GPT-6 Sol, the model OpenAI positions for coding and multi-step work, requires Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu.

How many GPT-6 messages do free users get?

OpenAI has not published a figure. Any specific number you see quoted for the free tier is either an API rate limit — a different system for developers — or an assumption.

What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna?

Price and positioning. On the API, Sol costs $2.00 per million input tokens against Luna's $0.10, and $10.00 output against $0.50. OpenAI points Sol at coding and agent work and Luna at high-volume tasks like summarising and extraction.

How much does GPT-6 cost per million tokens?

Sol is $2.00 input and $10.00 output per million up to 272K context, rising to $4.00 and $15.00 above it. Luna is $0.10 and $0.50, rising to $0.20 and $0.75. Cached input costs $0.20 or $0.40 on Sol and $0.01 or $0.02 on Luna.

Do I need to pay for Intelligent UI?

No. It is a ChatGPT interface feature introduced with the GPT-6 rollout, not something gated to a model tier.
