ChatGPT Go Free Year Ending? What to Do Before You're Charged
Claimed the ChatGPT Go free year in India from 4 November 2025? Those 12 months start ending in November 2026. Some offers end quietly; others renew at the standard Go price. Check Settings → Billing now, and don't cancel early: that can end free access immediately.
Last October, OpenAI made a rare offer: a full year of its ChatGPT Go plan, free, for anyone in India. Millions of people signed up, many without reading the terms. A year is a long time, and the first of those free years are now about to run out.
Here is what actually happens when your ChatGPT Go free year ends, how to see where your own account stands, and how to decide whether Go is worth paying for once it stops being free.
When does the ChatGPT Go free year end?
OpenAI announced the offer on 27 October 2025, and users in India could claim it from 4 November 2025, TechCrunch reported. Existing Go subscribers in India got the free year too. Before the promotion, Go had launched in India in August 2025 at ₹399 a month, according to MediaNama.
Your 12 months run from the day you redeemed the offer, not from a single national date. If you claimed it in the first week of November 2025, your free year ends in the first week of November 2026. If you signed up later, you have more time.
The quickest way to see your exact date is your billing page: on chatgpt.com, open Settings → Billing. If you claimed the offer through the Google Play Store, check Play Store → Subscriptions instead, because the subscription lives with the store you used.
Will ChatGPT charge you automatically?
It depends on your campaign. OpenAI's own terms for ChatGPT Go promotions say that some promotions "automatically renew at the standard ChatGPT Go rate on a monthly basis unless you cancel, while others do not automatically renew."
So there is no single answer for everyone. Two people who claimed the same offer through different routes, such as the web and a store, can see different renewal terms. Your billing page is the source of truth. If it shows an upcoming charge with a date, assume the renewal is on.
Two details matter if you plan to pay later:
- The standard price may not be the ₹399 you remember. OpenAI's ChatGPT Go help page says purchases are in US dollars, with local-currency billing in only some countries, and that prices may change over time. Check the amount on your billing page, not an old screenshot.
- Go may show ads. OpenAI's pricing page now notes that "this plan may include ads."
Don't cancel too early
This is the trap. If you're unsure, cancelling "just to be safe" feels sensible. With a free promotion, it can cost you the rest of your free months.
OpenAI's promotion terms are explicit: "If it was a free promotion, your access may end immediately upon cancellation." They also say that reactivating later "will not restore the promotional price", even within the promotional window.
The safer move is to set a reminder for two or three days before the renewal date on your billing page, then decide. To cancel at that point, OpenAI's cancellation guide lists the steps:
- On chatgpt.com: Settings → Billing → Cancel plan → Cancel.
- On Google Play: Play Store → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription.
- On an iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription.
Uninstalling the app does not cancel anything, and neither does deleting your account if you subscribed through Apple.
Is ChatGPT Go worth paying for?
After a year on Go, the honest question is whether you would notice going back to Free. For many people, the answer is no.
On OpenAI's current pricing page, the Free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats (subject to abuse guardrails), with limited uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory. Go keeps the same unlimited chat and raises those limits: more messages with tools, more uploads, more images, more voice and a longer memory. Plus, which OpenAI's Plus help page lists at $20 a month, adds advanced reasoning models and expanded deep research on top.
Look at how you used ChatGPT this year and match it to a plan:
| How you mostly use ChatGPT | Plan that likely fits |
|---|---|
| Quick questions, rewriting emails, explaining concepts | Free |
| Uploading PDFs, notes or spreadsheets several times a week | Go |
| Making images or using voice mode regularly | Go |
| Long reasoning tasks, coding projects, deep research reports | Plus |
| A few times a month, for anything | Free |
If most of your chats are plain text, Free covers you, because the extra Go allowance is mostly about uploads, images and voice. If you hit a limit on Free twice in the first week, upgrading then costs you nothing extra.
Free alternatives to try before paying
The end of a free year is a good moment to see what else is free. Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude and the answer engine Perplexity all have free plans, and each is better than ChatGPT at something specific. Gemini fits people who live in Gmail and Google Docs, Claude handles long documents well, and Perplexity shows its sources for every answer.
Our free AI chatbots list compares the free plans side by side, and the ChatGPT alternatives page covers paid options too. If you're deciding between the two best-known assistants, read ChatGPT vs Claude. For everything ChatGPT itself offers, see our ChatGPT review.
Your five-minute checklist
- Open Settings → Billing (or your app store's subscriptions) and note the renewal date and amount.
- Put a reminder in your calendar two or three days before that date.
- Don't cancel before then if you want to keep the free months.
- Look back at your usage and pick Free, Go or Plus using the table above.
- Try one free alternative for a week if Free alone feels too limited.
FAQ
When does my free ChatGPT Go year end?
Twelve months after you redeemed the offer. The earliest claims were on 4 November 2025, so the first free years end in early November 2026. Your exact date is on your ChatGPT billing page or in your app store's subscriptions.
Will ChatGPT charge me automatically after the free year?
Possibly. OpenAI says some Go promotions renew automatically at the standard monthly rate and others don't. If your billing page shows an upcoming charge, the renewal is on, and you need to cancel before that date to avoid it.
Can I cancel ChatGPT Go now and keep using it until the end date?
Not necessarily. For free promotions, OpenAI says access may end immediately when you cancel. Wait until a few days before the renewal date instead.
Is the free ChatGPT plan enough for most people?
For text-only use, often yes: OpenAI lists unlimited everyday text chats on the Free plan. Go mainly raises limits on uploads, images, voice and memory, so it suits people who use those features every week.
How much does ChatGPT Plus cost?
OpenAI's help center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly. The amount you pay in rupees depends on whether local-currency billing applies to your account, so check the checkout page.
