ChatGPT Go vs Plus: Is ₹1,999 Worth It Over ₹399?

The first free years of ChatGPT Go in India start ending around 4 November 2026, and OpenAI's terms for the India promotion are clear about what happens next: "At the end of the 12-month period, we will automatically charge your payment method the current monthly ChatGPT Go fee unless you cancel in advance." What does ChatGPT Go add over the free plan?

Not a smarter model. OpenAI's release notes from 7 October 2026 say "Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna". OpenAI's help page puts it plainly: "Free and Go users both have unlimited everyday text chats. ChatGPT Go includes higher limits for eligible features such as image generation, file uploads, and data analysis."

So Go is worth ₹399 if you regularly hit the free limits on images, PDFs or spreadsheets, or want longer memory and video in voice chats. If you mostly chat, the free plan already gives you the same model.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth ₹1,999 in India?

For some people, clearly yes. Plus is the only plan of the three with GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in chat, the Medium and High thinking levels, full deep research, Codex, and ChatGPT Work across devices. OpenAI's newest model for agent-style work, GPT-6.1 Terra, is also Plus-and-above only, and only in ChatGPT Work and Codex, according to OpenAI.

Our judgement: pay for Plus if you write code with Codex, rely on deep research for reports or assignments, or use ChatGPT for long, multi-step reasoning every day. For most students and casual users, Go or Free covers it, and the ₹1,600 a month difference is better spent elsewhere. Do ChatGPT Free and Go have ads in India?

Yes. OpenAI started showing ads on the Free and Go tiers in India in August 2026, TechCrunch reported. OpenAI's ads help page says "Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads", and that accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 don't see them.

Free users can switch to an ads-free experience, but OpenAI warns it "comes with lower usage limits and reduced feature access", including no image generation or deep research. OpenAI's pages describe no ads-free option for Go; to remove ads without losing features, it points you to Plus or Pro.

What happens when your ChatGPT Go free year ends?

Twelve months after you redeemed it, OpenAI charges the monthly Go fee to the card or UPI method you added at signup, unless you cancel first. A few details from OpenAI's help pages worth knowing:

• No yearly plan. OpenAI says it does "not support annual billing" for Go, Plus or Pro, so a year of Plus at ₹1,999 a month costs ₹23,988.
• You can't claim the free year again. OpenAI says reactivating after cancellation "will not restore the promotional price".
• Cancelling early may end access early. OpenAI's India terms say you keep Go until the end of the current 30-day cycle, while its general promotions page warns access "may end immediately". The safe move is to cancel a few days before your renewal date, not weeks before.
• To cancel on the web: go to Settings, then Billing, then Cancel plan. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel there. Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the plan.
