DesignCraft Review (2026): Pricing, Features, Pros & Cons

DesignCraft is the InDesign member of ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, a page layout and publishing application written from scratch in Rust and released in early October 2026. Its README calls it "a clean-room reimplementation of Adobe InDesign" and "an independent, open-source project" with no affiliation to Adobe. It is the least finished of the seven: the project's own roadmap gives its stage as pre-alpha, one step behind the alpha label the others carry. The repository had 3,811 GitHub stars on 14 October 2026, the fewest in the suite, and version 0.7.1 shipped on 12 October.

The README describes the skeleton of an InDesign workflow: spreads and parent pages, frames and threaded stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches, text wrap, columns, hyphenation and justification. The typographic detail that stands out is a Knuth-Plass paragraph composer, the line-breaking algorithm from TeX that sets a whole paragraph at once rather than one line at a time, which is the approach InDesign's own composer takes and the reason its text looks set rather than typed. Whether DesignCraft's implementation matches InDesign's output is not something anyone outside has tested. Tables, preflight and print packaging are not mentioned in the README, which links to separate gap and parity documents for the detail.

File support is practical where it exists. IDML, InDesign's XML interchange format, imports and exports, so a document can cross to and from InDesign with its structure intact within whatever DesignCraft supports. INDD, the native binary format, is not supported; ArtCraft publishes a separate small utility for converting INDD files to IDML. Export covers PNG, PDF including PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b, and EPUB. PDF/X-4 is the format commercial printers ask for, so its presence this early is notable, and whether a given printer accepts the output is a question for a test file.

Native builds exist for macOS, Windows and Linux plus a browser version. No hands-on test of DesignCraft had been published by 14 October 2026; Creative Bloq's review of the suite did not include it. For anything with a print deadline, the pre-alpha label settles the question for now.

How it was built, and how to read the numbers. ArtCraft's founder Brandon Thomas, formerly CEO of Storyteller.ai, says the Craft apps were written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 as clean-room reimplementations from public documentation, with no Adobe code, icons or presets. The parity percentages quoted above are the project's own, measured by its team against Adobe's documentation; no outside party has verified them, and the project itself distinguishes between a feature that exists and one that behaves like Adobe's. We have not installed the app. Download only from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com, because lookalike download sites appeared within days of launch. ArtCraft's paid plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for the company's separate AI studio and are not needed to run any Craft app.
