FilmCraft Review (2026): Pricing, Features, Pros & Cons
Our verdict
FilmCraft looks like Premiere and cuts like it on small footage, but its colour and export run on the CPU and it cannot open Premiere projects. DaVinci Resolve remains the free editor for real work; FilmCraft is the one to watch for Linux users and Premiere loyalists.

About FilmCraft
FilmCraft is the Premiere Pro member of ArtCraft's seven Craft apps, a nonlinear video editor written from scratch in Rust and released in early October 2026. Its README calls it "video editing, color and sound; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Premiere Pro" and says it contains no Adobe code, icons, presets or LUTs, using ffmpeg only as a test oracle. The repository had 12,906 GitHub stars on 14 October 2026, and version 0.7.2 shipped on 12 October. The README labels it alpha.
Its parity figures, re-measured against Premiere Pro 26.5.2 on 10 October: feature breadth about 86%, "ready for real work" about 56%. The editor has Source and Program monitors, a multi-track timeline with three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip, slide and razor tools, J/K/L trimming, markers, nesting and unlimited undo. Time is kept on integer ticks so 23.976 and 29.97 drop-frame timecode stay exact. A Lumetri-style colour panel offers curves, wheels, HSL secondaries and a vignette, with scopes computed from the graded image in linear light at 32-bit float. There are 93 effects, about 30 transitions, an audio mixer with ITU-R BS.1770 and EBU R128 loudness metering, titles, and caption import and export in SRT, WebVTT and SCC.
Codecs are FilmCraft's own: H.264, ProRes, AAC, DNxHD and DNxHR, MJPEG and PCM decode and encode; HEVC, VP9, AV1, Opus, MP3, FLAC and ALAC decode; hardware decoding for H.264 and HEVC on all three desktop platforms. Export covers H.264 MP4, ProRes 422 HQ, MXF, PNG sequences, GIF and WAV, with no AV1 export yet. Interchange runs through Final Cut Pro XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF. Premiere's own .prproj files cannot be opened, and there is no plug-in hosting for VST3, Audio Units or OpenFX.
Creative Bloq tested it on 13 October 2026 with Canon EOS R5 footage: 10-bit 4:2:2 did not play back, 4K editing was very slow without a proxy workflow, and after transcoding to 1080p the basic cutting, transitions, LUT import and colour adjustments worked. The README agrees on the cause: colour, keying and export still render on the CPU, and Windows and Linux are less tested than macOS.
How it was built, and how to read the numbers. ArtCraft's founder Brandon Thomas, formerly CEO of Storyteller.ai, says the Craft apps were written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 as clean-room reimplementations from public documentation, with no Adobe code, icons or presets. The parity percentages quoted above are the project's own, measured by its team against Adobe's documentation; no outside party has verified them, and the project itself distinguishes between a feature that exists and one that behaves like Adobe's. We have not installed the app. Download only from github.com/storytold or getartcraft.com, because lookalike download sites appeared within days of launch. ArtCraft's paid plans, from $8 a month billed yearly, buy generative credits for the company's separate AI studio and are not needed to run any Craft app.
Key features
- Multi-track timeline with ripple, roll, slip and slide
- Lumetri-style colour panel with scopes
- Own ProRes, DNxHD, H.264 and HEVC codecs
- FCPXML, OTIO, EDL, AAF and OMF interchange
- Caption import and export
Pros & cons
Pros
- Premiere's interface, trim tools and keyboard habits, with exact drop-frame timecode on integer ticks
- Its own codec stack: ProRes, DNxHD, H.264 encode and decode, HEVC and AV1 decode, hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC
- Broad interchange: FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF import and export
- Broadcast loudness metering, 93 effects, captions in SRT, WebVTT and SCC
- Native on Linux as well as macOS and Windows; free under MIT or Apache-2.0
Cons
- Colour, keying and export render on the CPU, so 4K and 10-bit footage were impractical in Creative Bloq's test
- Cannot open Premiere .prproj projects, and no plug-in hosting
- About 56% ready for real work by the project's own measure
- No AV1 export and hardware-only H.265 export
- Windows and Linux builds are less tested than macOS, per the README
Who should use FilmCraft
- Editors on Linux
- Students learning Premiere's layout without a subscription
- 1080p H.264 projects where CPU rendering is acceptable

Frequently asked questions
Is FilmCraft free?+
Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 with installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. ArtCraft's subscriptions are for a separate AI studio.
Can FilmCraft open Premiere Pro projects?+
No. The README states .prproj files cannot be opened yet. It imports Final Cut Pro XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF instead.
Does FilmCraft handle 4K and 10-bit footage?+
Poorly for now. Creative Bloq's test found no 10-bit 4:2:2 playback and very slow 4K editing, and the README says colour, keying and export still render on the CPU.
Is FilmCraft better than DaVinci Resolve?+
No. Resolve's free version is mature and GPU-accelerated. FilmCraft's advantages are Premiere's interface, native Linux support and an open codebase an agent can drive.
