Zapier, Make, or n8n? How to Choose an AI Automation Platform
All three connect your apps and add AI steps to workflows, but they differ sharply on cost, control, and setup effort. Here's how to pick the right one for your team.
Zapier, Make, and n8n all let you connect apps and automate repetitive tasks, increasingly with AI steps for summarizing, classifying, or drafting content along the way. But they differ enough in philosophy that the "best" choice depends heavily on your team's technical comfort and automation volume.
Choose Zapier if: you want the largest library of pre-built app integrations, your automations are relatively simple (a handful of steps per workflow), and you value ease of setup over cost efficiency at scale. Zapier's linear workflow builder is the easiest to learn, and its free tier is a fine way to test a few simple automations before committing to a paid plan.
Choose Make if: your workflows involve more complex branching logic, multiple conditional paths, or heavier data transformation between steps, and you're comfortable with a more visual, flowchart-style builder. Make also tends to be more cost-effective than Zapier as your operation volume grows, since its pricing model is generally more favorable at scale.
Choose n8n if: you want full control over your data and infrastructure, you're comfortable with (or have access to) some technical setup, and you'd rather self-host for free than pay ongoing subscription fees for high-volume automation. n8n also lets developers drop in custom JavaScript or Python code for logic that a purely visual builder can't easily express.
A practical way to decide: sketch out your three most common automation needs on paper first. If they're all simple, two-to-three-step connections between well-known apps, Zapier's simplicity is probably worth its cost. If any of them involve real branching logic or you're already paying a lot for Zapier tasks, it's worth trialing Make. If you have engineering resources and want to avoid ongoing per-task costs entirely, evaluate self-hosting n8n.
None of these choices are permanent — many teams start on Zapier for speed, then migrate specific high-volume or complex workflows to Make or n8n once the cost or complexity outgrows Zapier's simpler model.
