Claude vs n8n (2026): Which Is Better?

Winner

Different layers. n8n wins for automation: a self-hostable workflow builder with triggers, hundreds of connectors and code nodes, free on your own server, n8n Cloud from €20 a month. Claude wins for reasoning: it reads, decides and writes, and Claude Code comes with Pro at $17 a month billed annually.

Our rating4.64.3

"n8n vs claude" is a developer's search, usually from someone building an automation who has realised that one tool runs processes and the other thinks, and is wondering which to centre the system on. The answer is that they occupy different layers, and the better system uses both.

What each one is

n8n is a workflow automation platform you can self-host: triggers, hundreds of app connectors, routers, and JavaScript or Python nodes for custom steps. Our review rates it 4.3 and calls it the top pick for developers who want free, self-hosted automation with full data control.

Claude is Anthropic's assistant, rated 4.6 in our review for careful reasoning, long context and writing. Claude Code, the terminal agent, comes with every paid plan.

Price

n8n, per its pricing page: the self-hosted Community Edition is free; n8n Cloud Starter is €20 a month billed yearly for 2,500 workflow executions, Pro €50 for 10,000; a workflow run counts as one execution regardless of steps. The licence permits use "only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use".

Claude, per its pricing page: Free; Pro at $20 a month or $17 billed annually as $200 up front; Max from $100; Team seats from $20. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window.

What n8n does that Claude cannot

Run unattended, on your own server. A webhook arrives, a cron fires, a database row changes, and n8n executes the steps, logs them, retries on failure and never asks anyone. Claude has none of this; it responds when called. For a process that must run at 3 a.m. without a person, n8n is the tool and Claude is a step inside it.

What Claude does that n8n cannot

Think. n8n can branch on a value; it cannot read a customer's rambling email and decide whether it is a refund request, a bug report or spam, then draft the reply in the company's voice. Claude can, and can write the n8n workflow's code nodes too. Our review's strengths are long-document analysis and coding, which are the hard steps in most automations.

Together

The standard architecture: n8n runs the workflow; an AI node sends the relevant text to Claude; the workflow routes on Claude's answer. Self-hosting n8n keeps the rest of the data on your infrastructure, and only what reaches the Claude node leaves it, which is the privacy argument for this pairing over an all-hosted stack.

For a developer who would rather write than drag, Claude Code plus a scheduler is the other route: a script that calls Claude, run by cron. That is n8n without n8n, for people who can host a script.

Licence and lock-in

n8n's Sustainable Use licence allows internal automation and consulting work but not hosting n8n for others or embedding it in a product you sell. Claude's terms are standard SaaS. If you plan to sell what you build, read n8n's licence FAQ first.

Where each one is weak

Our n8n review's caveats are that self-hosting needs technical setup and maintenance, the polished app library is smaller than Zapier's, and the fair-code licence restricts some commercial reuse. Our Claude review's are no image generation, the five-hour usage window, and an unpublished per-plan context window. The lists do not overlap, because the tools do not.

n8n Cloud against self-hosting

n8n Cloud removes the server from the equation at €20 a month billed yearly for 2,500 executions, which makes it closer to Make or Zapier in shape. The licence question still applies to what you build, but the hosting question goes away. For a team without a developer to run a server, Cloud is the version to compare with Claude; for a team with one, the self-hosted edition is free and the comparison is entirely about which layer needs the money.

Re-check before you buy

n8n's pricing page and licence were read on 12 October 2026, as was Claude's pricing page. n8n Cloud shows annual rates with monthly behind a toggle.

Who should pick which

Pick n8n if the problem is a process that runs on its own, especially if the data must stay with you. It is our winner for the question as searched.

Pick Claude if the problem is reasoning, writing or code, and call it from n8n.

For n8n against its rivals see Make vs n8n and n8n vs Zapier. For Claude against the other assistants, ChatGPT vs Claude. The ranked list is at best AI automation tools.

Verdict: n8n wins

n8n wins the question as searched, because 'n8n vs claude' comes from someone who wants a process to run unattended, and Claude has no triggers or schedules of its own. Choose Claude if the work is judgement, writing or code, and call it from an n8n node, or use Claude Code when a developer is scripting the whole thing.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude replace n8n?+

Not for unattended workflows. Claude has no triggers, schedules or connectors that run while nobody is asking. Claude Code can be scripted by a developer to do repeatable work, but n8n is the tool for 'when this happens, do these steps' without writing a service.

Can n8n call Claude?+

Yes. n8n's AI nodes call external models inside a workflow, and its JavaScript and Python nodes can call any API. A self-hosted n8n sending documents to Claude and routing on the answer is a common pattern.

Is n8n free?+

The self-hosted Community Edition is free under n8n's Sustainable Use License for internal business, personal or non-commercial use; you supply the server. n8n Cloud, the hosted version, starts at €20 a month billed yearly, per its pricing page.

Is Claude free?+

Yes, for everyday chat with daily limits. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, with Claude Code included, per Claude's pricing page.

Which keeps my data private?+

Self-hosted n8n keeps the workflow and its data on your infrastructure. Any step that sends text to Claude sends it to Anthropic, under Claude's data terms for the plan you are on. Keep that step for the data you can share.
