Prompt Engineering Basics for AI Writing Tools
A practical, no-fluff introduction to writing prompts that get better output from ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI writing tools — with five techniques you can use today.
Most people get mediocre output from AI writing tools because they under-specify what they want. The model isn't guessing — it's doing exactly what you asked, which usually wasn't quite specific enough.
Give it a role and a goal
Instead of "write a blog intro about email marketing," try "you're a direct-response copywriter; write a 3-sentence blog intro about email marketing aimed at small e-commerce owners who've never run a campaign before." The role narrows tone; the goal narrows content.
Show, don't just tell
If you have an example of the style you want — a past post, a competitor's tone, a brand voice doc — paste a short excerpt into the prompt. Models are much better at matching a pattern than following an abstract adjective like "punchy."
Ask for options, then pick
Instead of accepting the first draft, ask for 3 variations of a headline or opening line. Comparing options side by side makes it obvious which one actually lands, and rewriting from a strong option is faster than fixing a weak one.
Iterate in the same conversation
Don't restart with a new prompt every time something's off — tell the model specifically what to change ("make the second paragraph shorter and cut the corporate jargon"). Follow-up turns in the same thread keep context, so corrections are faster than a from-scratch rewrite.
Separate drafting from editing
Use the AI for the first draft and structural ideas, then edit the final copy yourself (or with a grammar tool like Grammarly). AI-generated prose tends to have a few recognizable tics — overuse of "moreover," restating the question before answering it — that are easy to catch and cut in a pass.
None of this requires a paid "prompt engineering" course. It's five habits, and the biggest jump in output quality usually comes from the first one: being specific about role and goal before anything else.
