"Synthesia vs elevenlabs" is asked by people producing explainer or training content who are not sure whether they need a face. If the answer is no, ElevenLabs costs a fifth as much and sounds better. If the answer is yes, Synthesia is the only one of the two that makes one.

What each one is

ElevenLabs is a voice platform: text-to-speech with the most natural narration in the mainstream tools we review, instant and professional voice cloning, a Dubbing Studio, Voice Isolator and music. Our review rates it 4.7 and makes it our top pick for AI voice quality.

Synthesia generates presenter video from a script: an avatar, stock or personal, reads it in 140-plus languages, with dubbing from the same credits. Our review rates it 4.3 and calls it the go-to tool for training and explainer video without filming.

Price

ElevenLabs, per its pricing page: Free with 10,000 credits a month, about ten minutes of speech; Starter at $6 a month, annual billing equal to ten months, with 30,000 credits, a commercial licence, instant cloning and Dubbing Studio; Creator at $22 with 121,000 credits and professional cloning. Dubbing costs 2,000 to 10,000 credits a minute.

Synthesia, per its pricing page: Basic free with 10 minutes of video a month, 500 credits, watermarked and share-link only; Starter at $29 a month or $18 billed yearly with 1,250 credits a month, 125-plus avatars and 3 personal avatars; Pro at $89 or $64 with 6,000 credits and 180-plus avatars. Our review adds the Indian list: Starter at ₹1,499 a month billed yearly, ₹1,999 month to month. The page's figures are inconsistent in places, which the fetch noted; check the live page before buying.

Voice

ElevenLabs' narration is its reason to exist. Our review calls it the most natural over long reads, with cloning of your own voice from a short sample on Starter and professional cloning on Creator. Synthesia's voices are built for a presenter reading a script and are adequate for that; they are not the product.

Face

Synthesia's reason to exist. A script becomes a video of a presenter delivering it, with 125-plus stock avatars on Starter and personal avatars trained on your footage. For a training module that must exist in Hindi, Tamil and English by Friday, that is a studio replaced by a form. ElevenLabs has no avatar.

Dubbing

Both do it. ElevenLabs' Dubbing Studio translates speech in a matching voice from Starter at $6. Synthesia dubs from the same credits as video, which our review notes drains them fast when localising. For dubbing alone, ElevenLabs is cheaper; for dubbing a Synthesia video, Synthesia keeps it in one place.

Free tiers

ElevenLabs' free plan refills monthly and is enough to test properly, per our review, but carries no commercial licence. Synthesia's Basic is permanent too, 10 minutes a month, but videos are watermarked, share-link only and cannot be downloaded. Both are real trials; neither is a free production tool.

India

Synthesia prices in rupees, from ₹1,499 a month billed yearly, which our review highlights. ElevenLabs bills in dollars; at $6 a month it is still cheaper in rupees, but with no local list.

Where each one is weak

Our ElevenLabs review's caveats: no commercial licence on Free, per-character credits that make long scripts dearer than they look, professional cloning gated to Creator with 30 minutes of audio. Our Synthesia review's: watermarked, undownloadable free videos, credits shared across video, dubbing and surveys, a steep jump to Pro, and a fit for talking-head content rather than creative video.

Personal avatars and cloned voices

The two products' "make it me" features differ in kind. ElevenLabs clones your voice: instantly from a short sample on Starter, professionally from 30 minutes of audio on Creator, with a documented policy that it must be your own voice, which our review praises. Synthesia trains a personal avatar from your footage, 3 of them on Starter, so the presenter on screen is you. A founder who wants their own voice on a podcast ad needs ElevenLabs; one who wants their own face on a product video needs Synthesia; one who wants both uses Synthesia's avatar with whatever voice Synthesia provides, since the page does not say which engine that is.

Credits, and how far they go

ElevenLabs' credits are one per character for speech, so a 10,000-character script is about ten minutes and the whole free allowance. Synthesia's credits cover video, dubbing and surveys from one pool, and our review notes that localising a video into several languages drains them quickly. Both publish the numbers; neither feels generous once a project is multilingual.

Who should pick which

Pick ElevenLabs if the deliverable is audio: narration, voiceover, a dubbed podcast, a cloned voice. It is our winner.

Pick Synthesia if the deliverable is a presenter on screen, especially multilingual training video.

For Synthesia against its avatar rival see HeyGen vs Synthesia, and for ElevenLabs against its voice rivals, ElevenLabs vs Murf. The ranked lists are at best AI voice tools and best AI video tools.

Verdict: ElevenLabs wins

ElevenLabs wins because voice is the more common need, its quality leads the category in our review, and its entry plan is a fifth of Synthesia's. Choose Synthesia if the deliverable is a person on screen reading a script, especially training and internal video in many languages, where an avatar replaces a camera and a studio.

Frequently asked questions

Is Synthesia free?+

Yes, permanently. Synthesia's pricing page lists a Basic plan with 10 minutes of video or dubbing a month, 500 credits, 9 avatars and 140-plus languages. Videos are watermarked and share-link only, with no downloads. Starter is $29 a month, or $18 billed yearly; in India, ₹1,499 a month billed yearly, per our review.

Is ElevenLabs free?+

Yes. Its pricing page lists 10,000 credits a month, about ten minutes of text-to-speech, with no commercial licence. Starter is $6 a month, or $5 billed annually, with 30,000 credits, a commercial licence, instant cloning and dubbing.

Does Synthesia use ElevenLabs voices?+

Synthesia's pricing page does not say which voice technology it uses, so we cannot confirm it. Its built-in voices are adequate for presenter video; for narration people will listen to on its own, ElevenLabs is the category leader in our review.

Can ElevenLabs make a talking-head video?+

No. ElevenLabs generates and dubs audio; it does not generate an avatar. For a face on screen, Synthesia or HeyGen.

Which is better for training videos?+

Synthesia, which was built for them: script in, presenter out, in 140-plus languages, with rupee pricing in India. ElevenLabs produces the narration for a video you assemble elsewhere.
