Canva Magic Studio vs CapCut (2026): Which Is Better?
Winner
CapCut wins for video: its free editor cuts, captions and exports Reels with no design-tool overhead, and Pro is $19.99 a month with 1,200 AI credits. Canva wins when video is one output among posters, decks and ads, at $144 a year for Pro. In India, CapCut is unavailable, so Canva wins by default.

People type "canva vs capcut" because both are free, both run on a phone, and both now have AI buttons. But they are different kinds of tool. One is a design platform that happens to edit video. The other is a video editor that happens to make templates. Which wins depends on what you are actually making, and, for Indian readers, on whether you can open CapCut at all.
What each one is for
Canva Magic Studio is the AI layer inside Canva, the design tool: Magic Design generates layouts, Magic Media makes images and short video clips from a prompt, Magic Write drafts copy, and Magic Eraser and Expand edit photos. Video editing is one tab among a thousand design types. Its strength is that a poster, a carousel, a deck and a clip can all come from the same brand kit.
CapCut started as ByteDance's companion editor for TikTok and grew into a desktop and web editor. Its core is a timeline: trim, split, speed, transitions, auto-captions with translation, background removal and text-to-speech. It makes graphics only as far as a video needs them.
So the honest framing: Canva is where you make the thing around the video; CapCut is where you make the video.
The free plans
Canva's free plan, per its pricing page, includes the full drag-and-drop editor, 1.6 million-plus templates, 5GB of storage and "up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses" a month. Twenty AI uses is enough to try Magic Media; it is not enough to produce with it. Background removal, for images and video, is Pro only.
CapCut's free plan, per its pricing page, lists "free templates to start fast" and "basic editing tools". In practice the free editor is generous: the timeline, captions and most effects work without paying, and Pro gates premium templates, 1TB of storage and the AI credit pool. For a creator who only needs to cut and caption, CapCut's free tier does the job. Canva's free tier does a different job, and does it well.
Paid plans and what the money buys
Canva Pro is US$144 a year for one person on the pricing page, which does not list a monthly figure. That buys up to 200 Premium AI uses or 20 Ultra AI uses a month, background removal, the brand kit, and the Ultra-tier "Create a video with Canva AI". Standard AI tools do not draw from the allowance. Business is US$250 a year per person with 400 Premium uses.
CapCut Pro is $19.99 a month on the pricing page, with "yearly up to 30% off" and a note that final pricing appears only after sign-in and varies by region. Pro includes 1,200 monthly AI credits, all premium templates and 1TB of storage. Ultra, at $79 a month, has 8,645 credits for heavy AI video generation with the Seedance models. Teams is $12.49 a month per seat.
Per month, Canva is cheaper on yearly billing and CapCut is pricier but spends its money on video-specific AI. The two allowances are not comparable units: Canva counts "uses", CapCut counts credits that drain faster at higher resolution.
Captions, background removal and the AI that matters
For short-form creators, three features decide most purchases.
Auto-captions: both have them. CapCut's are faster to apply and include translation, and the styling presets match what you see on TikTok and Reels because that is where they came from.
Background removal: CapCut includes it in the AI toolset. Canva makes it a Pro feature for both images and video, though on Pro it does not consume the AI allowance.
Generative video: Canva's "Turn images into videos" is a Premium AI feature available on Free and Pro; full text-to-video is Ultra-tier and Pro only, and 20 Ultra uses a month runs out quickly. CapCut's Seedance integration is priced per second on top of credits, which is clearer but adds up.
The India problem
This is the row that settles the comparison for most of our readers. CapCut has been blocked in India since the 2020 ban on ByteDance apps, and the CapCut website returns a legal-restriction error from Indian connections. Canva is available in India with rupee pricing. If you are in India, the choice is Canva, or a different editor: YouTube Create is free, and InShot and VN cover the mobile-timeline use case. Our ranked AI video tools list covers the alternatives, and the free AI video tools variant covers the ones that cost nothing.
Who owns your footage
The autocomplete suggestions for this pair include "capcut safe" and "capcut canva same company", so both deserve an answer. They are not the same company: Canva Pty Ltd is Australian, ByteDance is Chinese. On safety, CapCut's terms grant it a broad licence to process uploaded content; Canva's terms do too, but Canva's licence has a specific restriction our review flags: Canva content cannot be used in a trademark or business name, which matters if you are designing a logo. Read the terms that apply to the work you do, not the one the other side quotes.
Who should pick which
Pick CapCut if you edit video on a phone, publish short-form, and want captions and cuts without a design tool in the way. It is our winner for the question as asked, provided you can access it.
Pick Canva if video is one of several things you make from one brand kit, if you want one yearly subscription for a small team, or if you are in India. For presentations and marketing graphics it is not close; see our AI presentation maker guide and the Adobe Firefly vs Canva comparison for the design side.
Verdict: CapCut wins
CapCut wins because the question people type is about video editing, and a dedicated editor with free auto-captions beats a design suite's video tab. Choose Canva if you make graphics, documents and video from one brand kit, if you want everything under one $144-a-year plan, or if you are in India, where CapCut is not available.
Frequently asked questions
Are Canva and CapCut owned by the same company?+
No. Canva is made by Canva Pty Ltd, an Australian company founded in 2013. CapCut is made by ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok. People confuse them because both offer free editors with AI features and both run on phones.
Which is better for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts?+
CapCut. It was built for vertical short-form video: trim, speed ramps, auto-captions, trending templates and direct export at the right aspect ratio. Canva can make a Reel, but its video editor is a tab inside a design tool, so timeline work is slower.
Which is easier to use?+
For a poster, a thumbnail or a slide, Canva. For cutting footage, CapCut. Each is easy at the thing it was designed for and clumsy at the other.
Is CapCut available in India?+
No. CapCut has been blocked in India since 2020 along with other ByteDance apps, and its website returns a legal-restriction error from Indian connections. Canva, YouTube Create, InShot and VN are the usual substitutes for Indian creators.
Is CapCut safe to use?+
It is a mainstream app with hundreds of millions of installs, but its owner is ByteDance, and CapCut's terms allow it to collect and process the content you upload. If that matters for your work, read the terms before uploading client footage, or edit locally in a desktop tool.
Which is cheaper, Canva Pro or CapCut Pro?+
Canva Pro is US$144 a year, about $12 a month, per Canva's pricing page. CapCut Pro lists at $19.99 a month, with yearly billing discounted by up to 30% and final pricing shown only after sign-in. Canva is cheaper if you pay yearly; both have usable free plans.
